Since the winter, we've fed the birds in our garden.
Before this year, we didn't as we have cats, but my heart broke to see the birds trying to find food when we had deep snow on the ground. We have a red Acer tree in our garden and in the snow, it drew a lot of birds because it seems they thought the leaves were berries. It truly broken my heart to see birds that we didn't usually see, searching for food. So I went to our local pet shop and bought some fatballs and seeds and hung them in the trees away from our fences and so away from our cats.
We had our garden relaid and replanted a few weeks ago, so rather than weeds and overgrown grass, we now have plants and shrubs. We also have a feeding station in our fir tree, which has dried mealworms and a fruit and suet mix. Since then we've been able to see and hear quite a few different birds.
We have a robin that we've had visit our garden for a while, but since feeding, we've seen mistle thrushes (which I've not seen since childhood), goldfinches, sparrows, magpies, blackbirds, blue tits, willow tits, and great tits, and we now have the chance to sit in the garden (quietly) and watch them.

Makes you feel more alive and grateful when you see tiny creatures grace your yard. For your generousity I hope they return continually. :)
A very sweet post with great tips!!
